Animals show their true intelligence
In recent weeks, animals have been reported as diagnosing cancer and choosing to provide company and comfort to the terminally ill. We have known for years about the skills of sniffer dogs, rescue dogs and hearing dogs. Is it time to give animals more responsibility and let them help humans out with modern life?

Apple Bites the Dust?
Apple has been beaten by a Taiwanese company in Stuff magazine's Gadget of the Year award. This is another blow to the company following the recent death of Apple founder, Steve Jobs. Apple have shrugged off the disappointment: "We still won a range of other prizes and are the true innovators in this market," said spokesperson Aisla Vatoy.

Local police are in talks with the town's seven bonfire societies following internet forum activity threatening violence and rioting at the traditional 5 November displays. "Cancellation is one of the options we are considering," said local police chief.

Champion Curler
A curling champion from Chailey has earned a place in the Youth Curling Team and will be trying for the Olympics team in January 2012. Eva Stone, 16, has been curling for 6 years and has been East Sussex champion for the last 3. She commented: "I am thrilled that I might be representing my country. And it's a chance to tell people about my sport - not many people know about curling, and I'd like that to change."

Current teens will have worse debt problems than their parents

Eat Like The English
New research suggesting that Scotland should adopt a more English diet to save lives, has been criticised by Obesity Kills UK. "The English diet, while it does contain more fruit and vegetables than the Scottish, should not be held up as an example of great healthy living," said Fatima Vanes, Founder of OK UK. "A mediterranean or Japanese diet is better."

Emin Lashes Out at Art Collectors
Artist Tracy Emin has criticised the selling of a Klimt painting for £40m. "Great art should be for the masses, and viewable in museums, not for fat cats who can buy it for their own private pleasure," she said. Sotheby's Auctioneers have refused to comment.

Two Uckfield students are setting up a Christmas business in Uckfield High Street. To be stocked with homemade and handmade goods created by their friends and families, the shop will be taking on a challenge in the current economic climate. All proceeds will go to local charities.

Halloween Hooligans?
Local leaders are calling for Halloween behaviour to be curbed. A wave of compaints were received by police after property was vandalised on Monday evening. Many people also reported that they had been subjected to offensive language. At one school near Lewes however, teachers have themselves led "trick or treating" expeditions, with all proceeds then donated to a local children's hospital.

Oprah Winfrey has spoken out on the way celebrities are treated in the press. "These people need help, not hounding," she said. "More and more celebrities will go the way of Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse unless we can find a way to intervene positively in their lives." Oprah is launching her own rehabilitation and psychotherapy clinic. Her comments have been welcomed by Lindsay Lohan's family.

New law proposes 25 year maximum in any job
A new law preventing anyone from staying in the same job for more than 25 years is being proposed by backbencher Noah Kandu. Kandu claims that teachers, judges, doctors and even football managers become stale after too many years doing the same thing, and should be forced to move on. Alex Ferguson, currently celebrating 25 years as manager of Manchester United, has not yet commented.

Health advisors have suggested that wearing high heels in mid-late pregnancy can be damaging, mainly for mothers but indirectly for their unborn children. Images of singer Beyonce, 5 months into her pregnancy, wearing stacked heels have led to warnings that choosing such footwear can lead to back problems and upset a pregnant woman's balance.

South Coast attracts big celeb names
Johnny Depp, Graham Norton and Lily Allen are all to be seen around about in East Sussex, as they have all recently purchased propoerties on the prestigious south coast. A spokeswoman for Depp told reporters, "Johnny is keen to spend more time down here in the beautiful south. He loves to surf and write poetry, and here there is space and inspiration for both." Most locals are pleased to think their area is so attractive to the big news, although the Major of Bexhill, Ivor Medall, commented, "Who needs these showbiz types? Here in Bexhill we are very happy with who we've got - lovely, decent people who live here all the time and make a proper contribution to the community."

Teachers Strike Back
The head of teaching union Teachers Unite has announced a majority vote for a one day strike on December 16. "Teachers will not accept attacks on their pay and pensions," said Anya Fayce. Education Minister, Michael Gove said, "This strike is on the last day of term for most students and so will just be like an extra day of holiday. It will not have any impact."
