Physical Education Faculty
PE is taught to all pupils in the school, from Year 7 to Year 13. All students in Key Stage 3 and 4 have 2 lessons of compulsory Core PE a week. The students experience a range of traditional activities, under the National Curriculum Areas of Study:
- Outwitting opponents
- Accurate replication of actions
- Exploring and communicating ideas
- Performing at maximum levels
- Identifying and solving problems to overcome challenges
- Exercising safely and effectively
This includes activities such as Football, Netball, Rugby, Badminton, Hockey, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Gymnastics and Dance. We also offer a range of newer activities such as Ultimate Frisbee, Golf, Rock-It-Ball, Boccia and Handball.
At Key Stage 4 the students also have the option of selecting PE as one of their GCSE's. We follow the Edexcel syllabus which accommodates students who are both practically and theoretically gifted. This course involves a range of practical and theory lessons.
We also offer BTEC Sport in Key Stage 4 which can accredit the students with 2 A* to C GCSE grades. This involves a range of assignments which can be completed to a Pass, Merit or Distinction level and is an increasingly popular course with our students.
In Key Stage 5, students are able to opt for AS and A level Sports Studies. This follows the AQA syllabus and despite becoming more theory based, it still provides the students with some practical experience.
The school also has an extensive Leadership programme. Students can complete the Dance Leaders and JSLA course in Year 10 and 11, CSLA and HSLA in Year 12 & 13. Students who show an ability for leading others are also invited to apply to become part of the North East Derbyshire Leadership Academy and the Olympic Sports Ambassador Programme.
Leadership is very strong and popular in the school and many Primary School events for our feeder schools are run by the Young Leaders at Tupton Hall School. |
