GCSE Astronomy – an opportunity to learn something new!

Dear Student

An opportunity has arisen for students to follow a course in GCSE Astronomy. This course has highlights that are not taught in your normal physics lessons and it offers an insight into existing and new developments in the world of astronomy.

Some of the best aspects of this course are the new changes that have been made by Edexcel that make it more interesting and less onerous. Edexcel have taken out the complex calculations of the previous GCSE and replaced them with more interesting ideas, including aspects on likely origins of moons, affects of asteroids on the Earth and methods for obtaining evidence for the existence of life in our Galaxy.

The course is rich in history, and you will learn unusual techniques that are not common in other subjects. You’ll realise after the course that not everything is plain and simple in the world in which we live!

The GCSE will take less than one year to complete with an exam worth 75% and coursework worth 25% of your final grade and it is supported with a textbook and an online facility. The course will take place at Stroud High School in S8 on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. It is open to all Key stage 4 and 5 students.

If you are interested then talk with your parents/guardian, then read the students’ guide on the next pages. Remember the course will start in September 2010, it will require coursework completion both within school time and out of school time, for instance one of the pieces of coursework is to make observations of the Moon.

Many students have enjoyed the experience before, were glad they took part and all found it a challenge worth completing.

So, if you are interested please ask you parent/guardian to contact me via this email address admin@stroudhigh.gloucs.sch.uk making sure to address it to ‘Mr Green, Physics teacher’ stating who you are and what school you come from, or send a letter to the school using the postal address above.

Look forward to hearing from you.
