PARENT GOVERNOR

Dear Parents

We currently have a vacancy for a parent governor.  One of the major contributions that parent governors bring to the work of the governing body is the experience of being a parent in the school.

All governors have a responsibility to act in the best interests of the school, to help it develop and to promote it within the community.  In the broadest terms they are responsible for the overall policy framework in the school and for ensuring that the school is run in line with these policies.  At St Mary and All Saints this can be done through membership of one or more of our committees, or by being involved in the monitoring of the curriculum.

At St Mary’s governors are encouraged to take an active role in the life of the school, and to take advantage of opportunities for feedback from other parents.  These include attending celebration assemblies, parents’ evenings and the recently started drop-in café at the community centre.

Training on the role of a parent governor in a Church school is available through the Diocese of Oxford.  If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to ask either me or our current parent governors Phil Harris and Samuel Awuku.  We can often be found in the playgrounds before and after school, or we can be contacted via the school office.

Yours sincerely

Janice Storch

Chair of Governors

Who are school governors and what do they do?

School governors come from every walk of life. There are over 300,000 school governors in England and they form the largest volunteer force in the country.

Each individual governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing body. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body.

The role of the governing body is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.

The Governors at St Mary and All Saints (SMAS) take an active role in the life of the school.

SMAS governors have a responsibility to act in the best interests of the school, to help it develop, and to promote it within the community. SMAS governors work with the Headteacher Tim Suiter and other senior members of staff to ensure that the school is a place where teachers can teach and pupils can learn effectively.

They attend celebration assemblies, parents’ evenings and hold informal drop-in meetings at the local community centre.

SMAS governors embrace the ethos and nurturing nature of our school, and work to ensure that everyone feels a part of it.

How to become a school governor. We currently have a parent vacancy. We would really like to build on our current strengths with a volunteer with financial experience.
