The first Christmas
Angel Gabriel appeared, his halo shining bright
a vision to behold, an astonishing sight.
To Mary he said, “I have news fair lady,
a saviour will be born, and you will bare God’s baby”.
But Herod wanted taxes, so off they were sent
Travelling on a donkey, to Bethlehem they went.
They arrived late at night and looked for a room,
Mary’s getting desperate, the baby’s coming soon.
But there was no room; they knocked on every door,
They were offered a stable full of animals and straw.
At last they were saved, by the kindness of a stranger,
Jesus was born and placed in a manger.
Shepherds shivering on the hillside protecting their sheep,
It’s been a long day and they yearn for sleep.
An angel appears, a king has been born,
They must journey to Bethlehem, soon, before dawn.
Majestic, wise kings, gazing at a distant star,
Knowing they must follow it and travel afar.
They arrive on camels baring frankincense, myrrh and gold,
Into the warmth of the stable and out of the cold.
The news travelled quickly, spreading far and wide
Angering King Herod, not known for being kind.
Fearing his throne, he killed all the small boys,
In the dead of the night and without any noise.
Don’t worry dear listeners you’ve got to have faith,
For Jesus was in Egypt, protected and safe.
Dear Jesus our saviour, we will always hold you near,
And all that is left to say is Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
