Welcome to the SEND pages at Northleigh.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Northleigh we understand that all children make progress at different rates and that there is often a reason for this that can go beyond effort, attitude or age.

If you have concerns about child's progress then your first port of call is the class teacher. Through quality first teaching we would hope that your child would begin to make progress at their own rate.

If after a set period of time, you and the class teacher are still concerned then we move your child on to Wave 2 of our school provision. This means they will have small intervention groups and targetted support in school.

Again, we allow your child a set period of time in order to allow these interventions and support to take effect and for them to make progress. At this point, if there is still difficulties we move to Wave 3. This is where we work closely with yourselves and outside agencies to identify specific difficulties your child may be experiencing. The outside agencies will carry out assessments, observations and meetings to carefully identifiy your child's needs. For most children, once this difficulty has been identified, specific support is put in place and the child will begin to make progress. Please remember that every child is an individual and will progress at different rates to their peers.

Finally for some children there is a need to have full time 1:1 support throughout the school time. Your child will then move to Wave 4 - this involves the process of obtaining a statement of educational needs. This a lengthy process and involves liason with many different outside agencies and a high number of assessments and observations of your child.

To ensure that we constantly monitor the children in our care, we record children at all Wave levels on a provision map. This details areas of need, targets to achieve this and whether outside agencies are involved. These provision maps are reviewed every term with the SENCO, Class Teacher and Head Teacher. If your child is at Wave 3 or 4 then you are welcome at any stage to meet with the SENCO to discuss these targets and how you can best help at home. If you child is on Wave 1 or 2, then you will be able to discuss these targets with your child's class teacher at parents evenings or at a time convenient for both of you. Children may move on and off the provision maps as they make progress or need more attention.

We operate an open door policy with regards to our SEND provision, as we understand that any concerns you have for your child are worrying and need to be addressed. You are welcome to talk to staff in the mornings or afternoons on the playgrounds or arrange a meeting for another time.
