
Welcome to Term 5
We hope you all had a fantastic Easter Holiday
Our topic this term is 999
This term we will be finding out about the life of Florence Nightingale and how she changed the lives of soldiers in the Crimean War. We will be comparing the hospitals back then to hospitals nowadays. They are very different!
We will be investigating different emergency vehicles and will be designing our own moving vehicle.
Also as part of our science work, we will be investigating forces and friction and will be planning our own scientific experient which we will then carry out in class to test friction.
We will also be writing our own non chronological reports and charcater profiles on literacy and carrying on with some fantastic new learning in numeracy!
This will be a very busy but fun term!
WEEK 1
Welcome back to term 5, we hope you had a great Easter break! We have had a fabulous first week back.
In literacy we have been creating our own character profiles for The Big Bad Wolf and Goldilock's. Koala class had some fabulous ideas and produced some great work.
In numeracy we have been working on 2 step word problems, the class found this tricky to begin with. If you could practice this at home with your children, then that would be great! We have also been looking at time.
In topic time we begun our new topic and started looking at night time. We researched what happened at night time and produced work about different jobs that happen at night time.
Week 2
We have had a great second week back at school, although the children have been very lively! In literacy we have been looking at non chronological reports. Monday and Tuesday we spent investigating and looking at the features of non chronological reports. Wednesday we planned our own report, Thursday and Friday we wrote up our reports about school.
In numeracy we began our no pen Monday, where the children and teachers are not allowed to use pens within the lesson! This week we have been looking at co-ordinates, problems involving adding and taking away 9 and 11 and other word problems.
In topic time we have begun looking at the characteristics of a nurse following on to Florence Nightingale.
Week 3
We have had a great third week at school. In literacy we have been researching, planning and writing our own non chronological report for Florence Nighingale. The class have done a fantastic job on their writing.
In numeracy on no pens Monday we look at symmetry and we did a symmetry carousel, which the children throughly enjoyed! For the rest of the week we have been working on venn diagrams and carroll diagrams. The class were amazing at this and seemed to love the activities.
In topic time we have continued to look at Florence Nightingale. The class wrote a letter from Scutari hospital from the perpective of a soilder. They did some fantastic writing. They also wrote an account of an experience with a nurse and compared Florence Nightingale to Mary Seacole.

Week 4
The children have been working really hard this week. In literacy we have been planning and writing our non chronological reports about days out. The children produced some amazing work, they should be proud of!
In numeracy we have been working on written number problems. The children were able to explore different strategies for solving each of the problems. We discussed these strategies as a class.
In topic time we have been looking at nocturnal animals. The children had some great prior knowledge!
Please continue practice handwriting with your children at home if you get a chance, especially focusing on sentence structure, for example capital letters and full stops.
Week 5
This week in school Year 2 have had art week. The whole of the year group have chosen different art activities to do. The activities were all based around night time. Koala class had lots of fun!
Week 6
The children have been working really hard this week in school. We have been doing special literacy work. The children have writen a character profile for Anansi and then wrote a non chronological report about night time, both independently.
We have also been learning about healthy lifestyles, medication, green cross code and designing a cake for the Jubilee celebrations. The winner of Year 2 will have their design made on a cake for next week. |
