English Language and English Literature are undoubtedly among the most important and influential subjects learnt at school. From the necessary lifeskills of communicating through writing and speaking, to nurturing a life-long love of literature, the English Department has something to offer every learner. 
 

GCSE English 2015 onwards (first examination 2017)

GCSE English Language (Edexcel)

Paper One (40%)

·         Responding to unseen 19th century fiction.

·         Imaginative writing  

Paper Two (60%)

·         Responding to unseen 20th and 21st century non-fiction

·         Transactional writing

 In addition to this, students will be assessed on their Speaking and Listening skills.  This assessment will lead to the award of a certificate indicating their level of achievement as Pass, Merit or Distinction. 

 

GCSE English Literature (Edexcel)

Paper One (50%)

·         Shakespeare (Macbeth)

·         Post-1914 Literature (An Inspector Calls)

 

Paper Two (50%)

·         19th century novel (Silas Marner or A Christmas Carol)
