Key Stage 3


As a Technology school we have the advantage of offering ‘state of the art’ technology. In the department we have dedicated Digital Fabrication Suite with CAD/CAM equipment that includes, a CNC routing machine, CNC engraver, laser cutters, 2 vinyl cutters and also two 3D printers. The suite, for use by the department has a variety of subject specific based programmes. All of this modern technology enables students to use real world industrial processes to produce very high quality outcomes. In Food technology there are two dedicated Food rooms along with 2 classrooms for teaching theory. Each Food room is equipped with 12 ovens and various utensils for food preparation.

Introduction to workshop and studio practices



Students are taught on a carousel system experiencing a skills based project in each materials area. These are designed to develop knowledge in the following areas:

·         Health & Safety

·         Tools & Equipment

·         Hand Processes

·         Machine Processes

·         Finishing Techniques

The projects provide an arena for them to apply their knowledge and develop their ‘Designing’ Capability:

Graphics- Pop Up Cards

Resistant Materials- Pull along Toy

 Food- Food Skills

Textiles- Pugly Doll



Students are taught on a carousel system experiencing four more Design & Make Assignments, on in each materials area. These both expand their specific subject knowledge of materials & processes and further develops their ‘Designing’ capability:

·         Graphics – Travel Game

·         Resistant Materials – Pewter Jewellery

·         Food – Hand held snacks

Textiles – Re-think denim



Students remain on a carousel system and experience five more Design & Make Assignments, again in each material area. These both deepen their specific subject knowledge of materials & processes and further develops their ‘Designing’ Capability in preparation for GCSE study:

·         Product Design(Graphics and Resistant Materials)- Concept Product and Promotion

·         Food – Ready Meals

·         Textiles – Mad Hatters

How is Design and Technology assessed?
In Years 7-9 students Designing and Making skills are internally assessed and tracked to ensure progress across Key Stage 3. These skills are further broken down to include; designing, making, testing and evaluating.
How can I help my child?

Parental support in Design and Technology can best be delivered through encouraging your child to complete extended learning activities to the best of their ability and ensuring they revise for written tests.  Whilst we provide resources and materials for most projects we request that ingredients for food technology lessons are supplied from home. Developing student’s awareness of the diversity of design and technology and its importance in the real world, from engineers to architects, chefs to computer games design can encourage students to see the relevance of the subject and future career opportunities.
