There are three components of the Latin GCSE:
1. Latin language (50%)
2. Latin literature and sources (Themes) (30%)
3. Latin literature (Narratives) (20%)
For the Latin language component, students will need to be able to translate and understand a Latin text. The Latin language exam will test students’ knowledge of Latin vocabulary and grammar.
For the Latin literature and sources (themes) component, students will learn about the theme of Roman Youth and education (for exams taken in 2018 and 2019). Students will study the topic through specific texts and sources; they will also develop their skill in analysing and appreciating literature.
For the Latin literature (narratives) component, students will study the story of “Echo and Narcissus” written by Ovid. Through the text we are going to consider the themes that the story brings up: vanity and unrequited love. They can also improve their ability to appreciate and analyse literature.
