This is a one year course of study suitable for students who have just missed out on meeting our Level 3 entry requirements. Our Level 2 pathway programme is designed specifically to equip young people with the skills and confidence to progress into employment, further education or apprenticeships. The structure of this programme allows students to develop key employability skills and further strengthen their independent study skills so that a range of options can be accessed on completion of the course. It is advisable for students undertaking this pathway to have an idea of their chosen direction after this one year course.
The Level 2 pathway is made up of a variety of components which are designed to meet the needs of individual students.
All students will work towards completing the WorkSkills Level 2 Diploma which is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grades B/C. For some students, it may be more appropriate to work towards the Level 2 Extended Certificate. This course is assessed by portfolio work, each unit of study is short and students will cover topics such as: teamwork, enterprise activities, leadership skills, interview skills, applying for jobs and managing your own money. Throughout this programme, students will develop their communication, time management and organisation skills. As part of the WorkSkills course, all students will also complete regular weekly work experience and many of the units of work will be based around this placement. Students will also have a fortnightly session with our Careers and Aspirations Manager in order to support their transition at the end of the year.
Many students on the Level 2 Pathway are also likely to be resitting GCSE Mathematics, GCSE English or both. This will apply to all students who have not achieved Grade 5 by the end of Year 11. Some students, in particular those who are hoping to continue into further education, will also study towards the Level 2 Higher Project Qualification. This is a rigorous course which allows students the independence to pick an area of study that extends them beyond any curriculum they have previously followed or are currently studying. Students will need to log all of the work they complete, produce an in depth written piece of work and present their project at the end of the course.
Students on the Level 2 pathway will be expected to complete work outside of lessons; this may be completing coursework, carrying out research, completing their logbook or preparing for examinations. It is therefore essential that students manage their time effectively and use their planners to record tasks and deadlines.
