Key Stage 3 English

At Key Stage 3 we aim to build on skills already developed at Primary School. We work with our primary feeder schools on a transition 'Passport' which helps to ensure continuity and progression.
In year 7 students are taught English in their form groups. They have a literacy through English lesson each week and a library lesson once a fortnight. Year 8 and 9 are taught in mixed ability groups. All students are given a wide range of experience in all aspects of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
We have an English learning mentor and a literacy support programme for targeted students.
Typical English lessons include a range of the following:
Reading - We read a whole range of novels, short stories and plays, both modern and classic.
Some of the books we read in class are:
Year 7
'Al Capone Does My Shirts' G Choldenko
'Skellig' D Almond
'Buddy' N Hinton
'Silverfin'  C Higson
'Trash' A Mulligan
Year 8
 ''Holes'' Louis Sachar
'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' John Boyne
'Pig Heart Boy'' Malorie Blackman
'Face' Benjamin Zephaniah

Have a look at the reading lists on the left if you want to find some more 'good reads'.
Writing - We aim to give students chance to explore and develop a range of writing styles including: writing to imagine, explore and entertain; analyse, review and comment; persuade, argue and advise.
Speaking and Listening/ Drama - Students have plenty of chances to produce individual presentations, work in groups and perform roles plays and drama.
We explore many aspects of media and citizenship including News, Advertising, Soap Operas, The Simpsons.
Once a week in Year 7 students focus on core literacy skills building on work done in Key Stage One and Two. Years 8 and 9 will have regular spelling tests and will revisit the core skills.
