A Window on the World

WELCOME TO THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The English Department aims to engage and enthuse students in order to enhance and develop their understanding of all aspects of the English Language.  We seek to develop each individual's skills in the three key areas of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing in line with the National Curriculum.  In addition, the wide variety of topics covered offers students the opportunity to develop spiritually, morally and as active citizens.

We aim to ensure that, by the time students leave the school, they have more than the basic standard of literacy.  Every students should be able to utilise the powerful tool that is the English Language.  We aim to instill the flexibility of thinking that will allow our students to transfer the wide variety of skills we teach and use them to enrich their working lives and their future learning so that we can support the school ethos of 'Education for Life.'

In class, students work is drafted in class books but final pieces for formal assessment are redrafted onto paper and kept in pupils files.  These pieces are given a National Curriculum level and sublevel and students are set clear target for progress.  Each unit has a particular focus for assessment, although tasks for reading, writing and speaking and listening are all attempted in each unit.
