St John Fisher Catholic High School was the first school in North Yorkshire to be designated Arts College Status. This was the result of a community inspired effort undertaken with the financial backing of over 400 individual sponsors. The first stage of this project was to build a new Music block, the Keelan Centre, which provides the following facilities for our students and the community at large:
A large music room to facilitate orchestra practices
A music ICT suite of computers
A digital recording studio
Individual practice rooms
Gallery for exhibitions of student Art
We have also developed and re-furbished a modern 120 seater Auditorium/dance studio suitable for the smaller productions, complementing the facilities provided by the Hall for major productions.
In addition to the three Art rooms we now have a series of small studios dedicated to Sixth Form Art Student use.
A computer graphics room has also been created as part of the Arts suite. Not only does the School benefit from the Status but so do our family of Primary Schools and the community at large, as these facilities are made available to them. This exciting project extends participation in the Arts and continues to enhance the self-esteem and confidence of our pupils. The Arts nourish the spirit and enable students to express feelings, ideas and beliefs and foster skills such as team building and problem-solving, which are valuable to young people whatever their career routes.
