Mr A K Alexander BA Hons Principal

Introduction

Choosing the ‘right’ school is as important for you as choosing the ‘right’ applicant or student is for us.  We set high standards for both students and staff.  This is a forward looking College where we expect students to do their best but also that we, as teachers, do the best we can for the children in our care.

We work hard at the College.   This is a friendly and supportive school where we expect everyone to do their best.  All new Year 7 students enter a triangle of partnership agreement signed by them, parents and College. This is presented at a meeting with parents by the Principal.

Aims

At Exmouth Community College we provide secondary education for all 11 – 18 year old students and a wide range of educational and recreational activities for the

whole community.  Staff, Parents and Governors of the College achieve these aims by setting good examples, having high standards and expectations and treating all members of the College with consistency, fairness, understanding and respect.

Our mission is to provide:
  •  a positive, enjoyable and structured approach to learning where success is rewarded and students’ individual aptitudes are  given the chance to develop
  • a safe, secure, non-threatening environment in which students develop consideration for others, self-discipline and positive relationships
  • a thorough education which prepares students for their future
A Brief Introduction to the College

The College has a 12 -14 form entry with over 2,450 students on roll in total; a teaching staff of 145+ and a support staff of 105.  We have over 450 students who study at Post 16 level (Yrs 12 & 13) for which there is a specialist teaching block with its own common room and café.  We continue to be very popular with students moving up from Year 11 (94% of those who stay in education after year 11 stay at the College) and are proud of the success of our Post 16 students many of  whom go on to attend major universities. We have also been very successful in the vocational courses delivered by the College.  The Post 16 teaching at the College is of high quality making it a top institution for added value at this level.  At KS 3 & 4 we continue to improve the attainment of students.

 The Catchment Area

The catchment area of the College extends northwards towards Exeter city boundary and eastwards to Budleigh Salterton, including attractive rural villages.  The school is a Community College and embraces working as part of the community.  We have strong local partnerships.

 Exmouth & Exeter
Exmouth is a town of 39,000+ inhabitants situated at the mouth of the River Exe (an area noted for its exceptional and rare bird population).  The town grew rapidly in the ‘70s and ’80s and is still growing.  As with so much of the South West, employment in Exmouth is largely in the service sector and the College is by far the largest employer in the town.  Employers also include Primary Schools, Exmouth Hospital and a thriving retail and tourist trade.

Exmouth is a very pleasant place to live. It is situated at the start of the Heritage Coastline which has been officially ranked alongside the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the natural wonders of the world. The coast provides a walk through time and stretches from Orcombe Point at Exmouth in Devon to Old Harry Rocks in Dorset. This wonderful coastline is not only scenically stunning and historic but also offers a range of recreational opportunities.

A new marina has recently been completed and the two mile beach front offers a variety of water sports, including wind surfing, sailing, power boating, water skiing and diving.  The Regional Indoor Tennis Centre is attached to the College campus and is used on a daily basis by both the College and the public. The College has its own Gifted and Talented Tennis School. Exmouth also has other excellent sporting facilities including a large Sports Centre with two heated pools, fitness suites as well as squash and badminton courts.  There are good local Golf, Country and Sports clubs.

On the outskirts of Exmouth is Woodbury Common.  It is a huge and beautiful moorland, ideal for walking, riding and picnics. The common is also the home of Woodbury Golf and Country Club offering two golf courses, one to championship standard.

The town has a wide range of hotels and restaurants, a number of pubs and night clubs as well as shopping facilities.

Exeter, the regional capital, is just twenty minutes drive or a short train journey away.  Recognised as one of the most desirable cities in which to live, Exeter offers a thriving arts community reflecting the presence of a major University. All the principal shopping chains are represented in Exeter and the city offers a wide variety of night life including top restaurants, night clubs, cabaret, three cinemas and theatres.

With two hundred thousand people living within a 15 mile radius of Exmouth, it is hardly surprising that there is a large and varied housing market, ranging from country cottages, marina apartments to large town houses.

East Devon Communications

Living in East Devon is very pleasant.  The landscape is beautiful and communications are good.  The M5 is just ten minutes drive from Exmouth.  Other locations include: Plymouth (1 hour), Bristol (1.5 hours) on the motorways – and Exeter (20 minutes) which has national rail connections to London, Bristol, Birmingham etc  London is just 2 ½   hours by train from Exeter. Exeter International Airport is one of the UK's fastest growing regional airports with flights to European and National airports. Bristol Airport is just an hour and a half away.  Dartmoor is thirty minutes drive from Exmouth and, of course, the International Heritage site, the Jurassic Coast, begins at Exmouth through to Dorset.

Specialist College Status: Maths and ICT (Computing)

The College is a Specialist School in Maths and ICT.  The Specialist Schools Trust has already recognised the College as one of the most rapidly developing schools in the country.  Mathematics uses state of the art technology to aid their teaching so that students have the best opportunity to achieve the highest levels of attainment.  All subject departments have greater access to ICT to aid their teaching and learning. Our website includes learning materials; information for parents and much, much more.  The College has 13 ICT suites, some 500 plus computers on its network.  We have a video conferencing suite, media centre and recording studio.

We work closely with our partner schools in the area to ensure continuity and improved attainment. We are totally committed to giving students the opportunity to achieve the best levels of attainment possible and to help us achieve this we have created a Study Centre for students who find it hard to keep up with coursework.  We have after school, Saturday and holiday coursework and homework clubs.

The College is also the East Devon Centre for Further Mathematics using ICT to provide education to students in schools without the expertise to teach the subject.  We teach AS Computing to students at our partner secondary school.

The College Facilities Overview

The College buildings are on two sites about fifty metres apart linked with a fenced bridge and pathway through a small park.  In 1997 a purpose built 16 classroom block was opened on Green Close site. On the Gipsy Lane site, buildings are grouped around a large villa (The Grange) and occupy a very pleasant site with many modern specialist facilities provided by a number of building programmes.  We have a continual programme of improvement as we believe the working environment is important for staff and students.

In 2005 a new building housing Art, Music and Science was completed at a cost of over 5 million pounds.  The facilities are second to none and include on of the largest school halls in England, being able to seat at least 450 students.

A Specialist Post 16 building was completed in September 1999 greatly enhancing our provision and giving the Post 16 students a sense of having their own “college” within the main site.

There are now 13 ICT suites on the two sites plus specialist computers for our Media Centre and other subject areas, such as Business and Art, have their own mini suites. We have a Lecture Theatre with video conferencing facilities.  Staff and students have their own work area on the I.T. network and email address: staff and students may access their College files at home via the internet.  The College has its own website (www.exmouthcollege.devon.sch.uk) to support teaching and learning and all students have their own work space.

Each subject has its own suite of rooms in a defined area of the College.  It is worth noting that despite the size of the College teachers and students do not use any more rooms here than in a much smaller school.  As one Year 7 student pointed out: “After you have been here for a few weeks the place seems to shrink!”

Sport is important at the College.   We have our own rugby coach and have very successful teams in all sports.  The College has two synthetic ‘astro-turf’ pitches, a fitness suite, climbing wall and other PE facilities, including a Lawn Tennis Association managed Indoor Tennis Centre on the site where we deliver our Gifted and Talented Tennis School.

The College has its own 50 piece jazz orchestra, music groups and a very successful Drama/Dance department who stage major productions each year which are always sold out in the first few days.  Students have performed at a variety of venues and events including the Albert Hall, London.

The summer terms ends with a highly successful and educational Activities Week involving all students and staff.  The activities include trips to Paris and Germany; cycling from London to Exmouth; scuba diving;  horse-riding on Dartmoor; cake decorating; kite making; producing a video film and many others.

Structure & Management

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) – the Principal, two Deputies and Assistant Principals – meet weekly as the leadership group: everything at the College is directed by this group in consultation, committees, working parties and the Governors.

The curriculum is delivered through the departmental system allied to the year groups and tutor groups – in larger departments this is done in half year blocks.  In year 7 teaching may be in mixed ability groups or by setting: as in Mathematics for example.  Setting is introduced from Year 8 onwards in departments at the latest and courses are run to GCSE and GCE AS/’A’ levels, NVQ and Vocational levels.

Staff Development

This important area of College life has a high priority, with the Staff Development Officer and Staff Development Group working on Performance Management, ITE and continuing professional development.  Teacher appraisal and monitoring is embedded in our culture. The College has developed its system which emphasises the developmental opportunities afforded by the appraisal/monitoring process. We work closely with Exeter and Warwick University in teacher training (ITE).

Recent Developments

The pace of change is rapid at present and some notable developments in the last four years include:

  • More recently vocational qualifications in Business Studies, Health and Social Care and ICT have been introduced and the range is constantly extending
  • The introduction of an “work based curriculum” for students who find school difficult is being built upon
  • The significant development of ICT facilities continues
  • The College is now an example of good practice for the Specialist Schools Trust
  • The introduction of more targeted intervention to enable students to reach their potential through our Study Centre
  • On going Curriculum development  linking closely with feeder schools: Ofsted: “outstanding”

And finally....

We do hope this information has been helpful.

If you are a teacher seeking a post, or a parent moving into the area, we will welcome your application and will always be prepared to supply further information.  There can be no doubt that there is a real ‘buzz’ about the College as we work together to continually raise standards and educate our students so that they can make the most of their future.  It is a very exciting time and a good time to consider joining us.

Life at Exmouth Community College is demanding but enormously rewarding – experience shows us that the main ingredient for successful students and teachers here are:

  • Belief in doing your best and being proud of achievement
  • The ability to work hard
  • A desire to get on with others and mutually support each other
  • Good humour

We look forward to hearing from you.
