Welcome to the French department!

 

Year 7

From September 2012 all students in Year 7 will study French following a course based on the Expo 1 text book. Students will learn to talk about themselves and their family, where they live and about school.

 

Year 8

All students in Year 8 will study French following a course based on Expo 2. They will learn to talk and write about themselves, their likes, dislikes and interests. Students will begin to use different tenses.

 

Year 9:

All students in Year 9 will study French following a course based on Expo 3. They will learn to talk and write about daily routine, holidays, their friends and healthy lifestyles. They will extend their ability to communicate in and to understand different tenses. Some students will also find out about young people’s lives in different European countries.

 

GCSE:

Students who have enjoyed and been successful in French in Year 9 can opt to study it for GCSE.

We follow the AQA GCSE Expo course book for 2 years, supplemented throughout by additional material and resources.

The course is assessed through Controlled Conditions Assessments (2 written and 2 speaking assessments during Year 11) and through exams in listening and reading at the end of Year 11.

In 2012, 79% of students gained a C or above at GCSE.

 

Some students may opt to follow the OCR NVQ Level One and Two course, or its equivalent.

 

A level:

AS: we follow the AQA course in Year 12.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Media: television, advertising and communication technology
  • Popular culture: cinema, music and fashion/trends
  • Healthy living/lifestyle: sport/exercise, health and well-being, holidays
  • Family/relationships: Relationships within the family, friendships, marriage/partnerships

A2: we follow the AQA course in Year 13.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Environment: Pollution, energy, protecting the planet
  • The multicultural society: Immigration, integration, racism
  • Contemporary social issues: Wealth and poverty, law and order, impact of scientific and technological progress
  • Cultural topic: A region/community, a period of 20th century history, the work of an author, the work of a dramatist/poet or the work of a director/architect/musician or painter.
