ART POLICY
We believe that children should be given the opportunity to enjoy, discuss and critically respond to a variety of art, craft and design forms.
Aims & Objectives
To encourage the natural abilities that every child possesses in this curriculum area.
To promote enjoyment in all art activities.
To help children communicate confidently and develop aesthetic judgments applied to their own work, to the work of others and to the world around them.
To teach children to look carefully at images and artifacts from the past, the present times and from other cultures.
To develop skills and knowledge of materials so that ideas can be generated, undertaken and completed with success.
To use increasingly expressive language and art specific vocabulary to respond to their own work and that of others.
All pupils will be given an opportunity to develop their I.C.T. skills using various graphics software packages.
Resources
We have a wide range of resources to support the teaching of art and design across the school. Basic resources are kept in the classrooms. More specialised equipment is kept in two easily accessible cupboards within the school. Other resources can be found in the store cupboard afjacent to the hall..
A kiln is located in the After School Club hut. Clay and clay tools are found in the chair store adjacent to the hall.
Library :
There are also books to be found in the school library. Swindon Museum and Art Gallery: Further resources and workshops for the children are available here Tel: 01793 466556
Teaching
We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in art and design. Our principle aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. We explore and develop ideas, share and evaluate work.
Timing
One hour per week KS2
30 minutes per week KS1
Special needs/equal opportunities
We teach art and design to all children, whatever their ability.
Teachers provide learning opportunities that are matched to the needs of children with learning difficulties. Each child is encouraged to feel their work is respected and of equal value to the work of others. This can be done by ensuring that all children’s work is celebrated at some time in the term.
Safety Issues
All children should be taught to use tools and equipment in the correct manner.
Assessment
The art coordinator will keep a school portfolio, including photographs which reflects the diversity of art work within the school. This can be as a resource for teachers as well as a means of celebrating children’s work. It can also be used as a method of sampling the progression of children's art work within the school.
Each child’s sketchbook may be used as an aid to teacher assessment.
Child’s Portfolio :
Once a year an assessment activity will be completed by each child. These pieces of work will be completed in purple assessment books. The assessment piece of work will be an end piece of work from one of the Units in the Art and Design scheme of work. It is for the teacher to decide which final piece from one of the yearly units will be used for their assessment.
The units of work that the assessment piece will come from can be found in the Art Scheme of Work.
In addition to this assessment, a self portrait will be completed once every year into art sketch books.
Display Statement
Within this school, art is a valued tool for display and should be a vehicle for celebrating the child’s work within this subject. Art work will be displayed within the childrens classrooms and throughout the school.
Success Criteria
The coordinator will review the success of this policy by means of sampling and observation. The criteria for success are :-
- Children’s work reflecting the skills being taught.
- How the children’s sketchbooks have been used to record visual evidence and develop ideas.
- Children’s work shows an appropriate and developing use of 2D and 3D materials.
- Resources available for children and staff are easily accessible and effectively organised.
