GCSE Art & Design Key Stage 4

Full Course

Art affects every aspect of society, responding to people’s physical, spiritual and aesthetic needs. This course is primarily concerned with visual and tactile means of expression and offers a unique vehicle for communication and expression, equivalent in importance to literacy and numeracy.

If you enjoy painting, drawing, working in clay, printing, handling materials, then you should seriously consider following this course.

The work you do will be broadly based and will build on the Art work you have done in Years 7, 8 and 9. The work will be very varied and interesting. You will have the opportunity to develop your own ideas and interests within the set themes. Areas covered during the course are: Drawing and Painting (a central skills to all areas of art), Ceramics, Printing and Graphics.
In the second year you will have opportunity to specialise in the particular areas of Art which interest you. You may wish, for example, to specialise in Ceramics or Printing. If you would like to know more about these options and the wide range of careers related to Art, look at the displays in the Art Rooms and ask your Art Teacher for an information booklet.

All pupils taking this course will work towards a final exam which will be assessed at the end of Year 11. The work is marked by the Art Department Staff and Externally Moderated. The final grade will be made up of coursework (60%)and examination work on a selected theme (40%). For this, students research and develop a personal interpretation of the theme over an eight week period. There is then a TWO day practical test to produce the finished artwork.

All candidates must keep a sketchbook. All projects are researched and documented in these.

It will help students if they collect and store postcards, newspaper cuttings etc. that relate to all aspects of Art, Craft and Design, especially those that inform and support the practical work undertaken during the course. To support Critical Studies, visits are made to Museums and Art Galleries.

The course leads on to A/S and A Level Art and Design.
