THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT MISSION

To encourage and foster an interest and enthusiasm for mathematics and to enable every student to be confident applying their knowledge when facing problems in the real world.

Key Stages

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

In Year 7 students are placed in ability groups based upon Key Stage 2 results and information provided by the primary school. In each half year there are 4 sets. One of these is deliberately small, usually no more than 14 students, to provide them with the opportunity to 'catch up' and reach level 5 by the end of year 9.

Each half term the students are tested to assess progress. Each students progress is constantly monitored and set changes made from time to time where it is deemed appropriate for the student.

Maths Key Stage 3
Students continue to be set across the half year and continue to be tested each half-term to assess the progress they are making.

Key Stage 4 (KS4)

Maths GCSE

Key Stage 5 (KS5)

As a pre-requisite for acceptance on this couorse students are generally expected to have been entered for GCSE at the Higher Tier and to have achieved at least grade B. Where this criteria has not been met acceptance on the course is by negotiation.

There are currently 4 sets in Year 12 completing the AS by the end of the year. For those students who are not accepted onto this course we offer an AS, with more teaching time, over two years.
To achieve an AS students have to complete 3 modules.
Normally students are entered for Core 1 in January and this is followed by Core 2 and either Stats 1 or Mechanics 1 towards the end of May. Teaching for the second year of the course (A2) starts in early June once the AS exaams are completed. Once again students have to complete 3 modules and normally enter Core 3 in January followed by Core 4 and either Stats 2 or Mechanics 2 in late May or early June.
