THE MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT MISSION

As a Language College, the Modern Languages Department aims to be a centre of excellence for the teaching of a growing number of modern languages. Students are encouraged to cultivate an understanding of cultures and customs in other European countries and are given opportunities to communicate with their fellow students in Europe and world-wide, through various cross-curricular projects.

The MFL Department firmly believes that students must have the opportunity to relate their language learning to the country concerned. With this in mind, exchange visits and study trips are organised for all three languages in KS3 and KS4. All students studying at AS level are involved in work experience in France, Germany and a study visit in Spain. A study visit to China began in 2006-7 and this has been very successful.

Students who study languages at The Piggott School are given many opportunities to develop their skills to contribute to today’s internationally focused society.

Facilities

Two language suites at the cutting edge of technology add an exciting dimension to students of all ages and abilities. Students use the most up-to-date language software, video-conferencing, websites and media facilities to support their language learning.

As a specialist language school, in years 9, 10 and 11, all students study at least one GCSE foreign language. Chinese is open to those who have already studied it in KS3.

Areas Studied in KS4

All students studying the Linear Course follow the Edexcel syllabus. The Modern Language courses focus on the study of practical everyday situations, including family and friends, shopping, holidays, careers, the environment and living abroad. You will extend your expertise in the four skills:

  • listening,
  • reading,
  • speaking and
  • writing.

With the new examination from 2009, teachers and pupils have much more control over the content of the oral and the written assessments. This will allow for greater freedom in choosing topics to study.

Skills Developed in KS4

The Modern Languages Department will offer language learning at the cutting edge of Information Technology. Working in a state-of-the art language laboratory, you will be able to practise and enhance your language skills independently and at your own pace with instant feedback from your teachers. There will also be timetabled weekly access to the Modern Languages Computer Suite where you will be able to use the latest language software, e-mail links with European Schools and international websites. These will all play an important role not only in your language learning, but also in broadening your understanding of Europe and beyond.

To help you with the speaking skill, you will have regular contact with a foreign language assistant. This is an opportunity for you to talk about your own interests and compare them with those of young people in Europe in addition to practising the language you have learnt in lessons.

You will have the chance to live as a true European by taking part in one of our language programmes. You and your friends will be able to put your language skills to the test in real life situations.
