The school attaches great importance to the maintenance of high standards of discipline and behaviour. In a school of this size it is essential that clear lines of communication between the home and the school are established. This is done through the Year System. Students are placed in a tutor group by year of entry and will normally remain in this group for the rest of their time in the school.
Each year group has a Head of Year with a team of Year Tutors who are given the responsibility of monitoring the social and academic progress of each individual student in their Tutor group. These groups are carefully arranged.
In addition, there is a Head of Lower School who oversees Years 7, 8 and 9 and a Head of Upper School who oversees Years 10 and 11. There is also a Head of Sixth Form.
The school has a Pastoral Team that consists of 3 staff. The team will deal witrh the non-academic issues in the school. This includes uniform issues, mobile phones, road safety and bike permissions. The Pastoral team is responsible for the prefect system and the peer mentoring scheme. The team will investigate major incidents that occur in and around the school.
There is an open-door policy for students who want support in any issue that is causing them concern. The Pastoral team uses a restorative approach in dealing with incidents around the school.
Parents are expected to keep in close contact with the school through the child's Tutor and Head of Year. Any questions concerning the academic or social welfare of a child should, in the first instance, be referred to the child's Head of Year. There will, of course, be an opportunity to discuss your child's progress with subject staff at Parents' Evenings.
Discipline is firm, but friendly and fair. It is aimed at encouraging young people to respect others, to show courtesy and consideration towards all other people and to become responsible for the consequences of their actions. They need to learn how to live together and prepare themselves for a responsible role in society outside school. If the occasion arises where a student needs to be disciplined, every effort is made to ensure that sanctions are just and fair. |
