Welcome to Product Design

- Successful designs come from
carefully calculated risks

The Rochester Grammar School provides a broad, varied and exciting programme in Design Technology. From making key fobs,  making cushions, designer clocks or producing innovative electronic solutions to problems, the whole aim of Technology is to lay an enjoyable and firm foundation in order to achieve success.

"Provision in D&T is very good. There are excellent standards overall, particularly among the accelerated learning group. There are some highly innovative curricular initiatives and achievement of high grades is exemplary." - OfSTED 2003

In Key Stages 4 and 5, pupils can undertake a GCSE in either Textiles, Resistant Materials, or Graphic Products. These are all highly successful courses, and the unique contribution of Technology in terms of building the girls’ academic and creative understanding of the manufacturing industry come to the fore. The very nature of Technology makes it an excellent platform to ensure that girls leave Rochester Grammar School with a strong ‘can do’ attitude in a still male dominated world.

Girls can elect to continue their studies of Technology into KS5 and as this A-Level complements studies in the sciences, general arts, or fine arts, it makes an excellent choice. This is a very successful A-Level, and last year half of the girls achieved an A grade, with 90% of the students securing at least a B grade. From this course students have gone on to study a variety of design based degrees, as well as chemical engineering, nursing degrees and primary teaching degrees to name but a few.

If you asked any of the team delivering Technology why they are so passionate about teaching their subject, you would probably need a spare hour or two! But perhaps one of the strongest reasons why we all enjoy teaching Technology so much to the girls here at RGS is because we see before our very eyes how success in this subject builds their confidence and self-esteem. All this comes through the delivery of a curriculum that develops the girls’ academic and creative skills in a unique and unparalleled way.
