French is taught from Year 5, building on the language learning achieved in primary schools. By providing dedicated language lessons, KS2 pupils have the opportunity to make rapid progress through the initial National Curriculum levels. The KS2 course aims to develop reading and writing as well as speaking and listening skills and incorporates many cross-curricular aspects, particularly links with literacy and intercultural understanding. The course follows topics related to pupils' own experiences and uses a wide variety of resources and activities.
In Years 7 and 8, pupils are set, which enables them to follow lessons more tailored to their individual requirements. They use a text book supported by software but the course also draws on a variety of alternative resources. In KS3, pupils develop their language-building skills, acquiring knowledge which enables them to begin to express themselves in the language. They also learn to work with authentic materials, which improves their confidence and comprehension. At the end of Year 7, pupils currently have the option to change from French to German, which offers an alternative route into language learning for those who would benefit from a change.
