PSHE & Citizenship is afforded great significance within the school. Pupils study a wide range of topics in a supportive & ‘safe’ environment aimed at helping them become responsible citizens as they move towards adulthood.
In Year 5 pupils study
  • Friendship Making & Bullying, the Environment, Sex & Relationships education, Personal Safety and Drugs. This includes:
    • learning how to be a good citizen & developing an empathetic attitude to others.
    • learning how to adjust to the challenges & routines of a new school.
    • the environmental impact of human behaviour.
    • Examining personal physical & emotional development.
    • Examining commonly available drugs & their effects.

Discussion Points:

Discuss how what we choose to do affects the environment we live in.
How we can best preserve the earth for future generations.How the human life cycle develops.
Assessments: Pupils use a self-assessment grid to summarise their pre-existing knowledge of each unit of work & what they have learned once the topic has been completed. This is also updated weekly.
In Year 6 pupils develop their knowledge of a range of topics... This includes:
  • Examining personal responsibility & involvement in the community.

  • Awareness of the issues surrounding Alcohol, Tobacco & Solvents.
  • Looking at how physical changes go hand in hand with emotional & behavioural changes.
  • Examining the role of healthy eating & exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Looking at citizenship on a global scale.

Assessments

Pupils will complete an assessment at the beginning & end of each topic & will update their learning map after each individual lesson. Some units of work culminate with a written assessment task.
In Year 7 pupils study the ... This includes:
  • Smoking & its impact
  • The criminal justice system with particular reference to young people
  • The vital importance of sustainable development.
  • Developing an understanding of personal finance
  • S.R.E. with particular reference to the importance of relationships.

  • Drugs of all types and class & their consequences.
  • Relationships & families including contraception & STD’s.
  • Diversity on a personal to a global level.
  • Basic emergency aid, recovery position

Discussion points

  • Why you should limit alcohol consumption & its impact on the mind & body.
  • The importance of empathy & listening skills in a relationship.
  • The primary importance of your own safety when assisting in an emergency situation.
Assessments

A short end of topic project, e.g ‘Making choices, assessing risks’(SRE) is completed to assess pupil understanding.
Note that these projects should include correct vocabulary, accurate information and coherent cause & effect reasoning.
