 Literacy in All Saints
Literacy lessons:

At All Saints we have daily Literacy lessons that complete activities linked to a theme and that cover the core strands of the National Curriculum.  As a Creative Curriculum school we use our Literacy lessons as a way of creating purposeful links across the curriculum and develop the children’s Literacy skills throughout a unit to create a purposeful end result called a ‘big write’. Throughout the school year the children will explore different text types including narrative, non-fiction and poetry.

Teaching Reading:

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One we use Read Write Inc. Phonics which is a systematic approach to teaching reading, writing and comprehension that has been developed by Ruth Miskin.  Read Write Inc. is a method of learning centred on letter sounds and phonics, blending them together to read and write words using sounds that have been taught in their reading and writing.

In Lower Key Stage Two children needing to continue their phonics learning follow the DfES Letters and Sounds programme to help children become fluent readers. It focuses on high-quality phonics (using blending and segmentation techniques). It teaches children the correspondences between graphemes (letters) in written language and the phonemes (sounds) in spoken language. These correspondences can then help children to read and spell words.

In Lower and Upper Key Stage Two the children take part in focused Guided Reading sessions, grouped by ability to help develop and enhance their reading skills.

Teaching Spelling:

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One we use Read Write Inc. Phonics to help support the children’s spelling by teaching the children to use and apply the sounds they have been taught using their Fred Talk to spell words.  They also begin to learn red words which have a naughty grotty grapheme that they have got to learn and cannot Fred Talk.

Once children have completed Read Write Inc. Phonics in Key Stage One then they begin RWI Spelling sessions.  The children take part in a range of teacher led paired work and independent activities to help them become accurate and confident spellers.

In Lower and Upper Key Stage Two the children take part in Support for Spellingsessions that focus on a clear spelling objective and through a range of strategies, approaches and activities the children help to improve and practise spellings they find difficult.
