I have been the head teacher here at Petersfield Infant School since January 2004 and I am as
excited about the role now as I was when I was first appointed.
Our school is one of the largest infant schools in Hampshire, and currently has 12 classes. All classes are mixed ability, although none are mixed year groups. There are full time learning support assistants in Year R and part-time ones in Years 1 and 2. In addition to this, we have 5 Higher Level Teaching Assistants working across the school. They take small groups of children for differentiated numeracy, literacy and nurture groups and also cover the teachers’ PPA time (planning, preparation and assessment time). We have an experienced special needs team who have a range of specialised knowledge between them to support the children.
We have a strong governing body, who not only act as our critical friend, but also provide us with support, challenge and encouragement.
As a parent in our school, you automatically become a member of our parents association, PISA. PISA works tirelessly to raise money and provide fun events for both the children and the parents. Over the past few years, they have raised a large amount of money to help us refurbish the ICT suite and the outdoor area, which is such a vital part of our learning environment.
We have very strong links with Herne Junior School. The senior leadership teams meet each half term, as do members of the governing body. We are committed to creating an effective partnership between our two schools to ensure continuity in the children’s learning.
We have high expectations of both behaviour and standards and although we have received two outstanding Ofsteds in 2005 and 2008, we are not complacent and are constantly striving to improve.
Visitors remark on the purposeful, calm and happy atmosphere they feel on entering the school. In the past few years, the school has been refurbished inside and out adding to the bright and attractive surroundings.
