Healthy Schools

The Healthy Schools Programme is a joint initiative between DCSF and Department of Health which promotes a whole school / whole child approach to health.

Healthy Schools is intended to deliver real benefits in respect of:

  • Improvement in health and reduced health inequalities;
  • Raised pupil achievement;
  • More social inclusion; and,
  • Closer working between health promotion providers and education establishments

We want all children and young people to be healthy and achieve at school and in life. We believe that by providing opportunities at school for enhancing emotional and physical aspects of health. In the longer term, this will lead to improved health, reduced health inequalities, increased social inclusion and raise achievement for all.

Here at St. Bede's we are a fully accredited Healthy School and we are very proud of this status.

The Healthy Schools status has been achieved through the work of different curriculum areas within the school, such as Food Technology, PSHEC and PE. However, the Healthy Schools status is not awarded purely on curriculum merits. To become a Healthy School, we also must show that we aim to build healthy practices into our everyday life here at St. Bede's.

Some of the ways in which we have embedded a Healthy Schools attitude here include:
  • Our healthy breaktimes snacks initiative which helps pupils to understand the value of healthy eating;
  • A wide range of active clubs on offer to promote regular exercise;
  • A healthy and varied menu for school lunches;
  • Promoting emotional health and well-being throughout the school;
  • Clearly communicated anti-bullying policies

plus many more.
