Chess Club

Chess continues this term at lunchtimes on Tuesdays, for all pupils who have already attended during this School year. (New players can start in September).

Wivelsfield players have performed well in competitions recently.  Last term the team had victories against Broadwater School, Worthing and Holy Cross School, Uckfield.  36 pupils played in the U.K.Chess Challenge 2010.  This competition was played over 7 weeks and children achieving the required standard entered the Sussex Final held at Warden Park School on 1st May.  Those 7 children each played 6 games during the day and James Bowdery, Robert Sillett and Travis Powers achieved at least four points out of six, thereby qualifying for the Southern England Mega-final to be played in July.  Congratulations should be given to all the children who took part.  The School Team will play in the Finals competition for this school-year, to be held at St. Lawrence School, Hurstpierpoint on the afternoon of 15th June.

Mr Watson continues to run the Chess Club, and it is thanks to his dedication, encouragement and expertise that the pupils’ knowledge and love of Chess is nurtured and developed.

Sussex Chess Finals

James (Captain), Travis, Robert, and Ed travelled to St. Lawrence’s Primary School, Hurstpierpoint for the semi-final and final rounds of this year’s Sussex Chess Leagues on 15th June.  The competition was strong and the results very close.

Wivelsfield defeated St. Margaret’s Angmering in the semi-final and Balfour, Hove in the final.  All the boys contributed with skill and determination; they received medals and a trophy, which can be seen in school.

This was a very happy and pleasing end to our chess year.

Mr A Watson.
