Term 5: 15th April -24th May 2013
Writing
We are currently looking at the features of a non chronological report. We will be linking our writing to our Geography topic and writing a non chronological report on our local area Coley. To help support your child's learning you find out interesting facts about Coley, as well as spending time looking at books that have features of non chronological reports. See if you can find the following features...

Phonics
Phase 5 Looking at alternative pronunciations and spellings.
e.g. /ai/
ai within words (rain), ay at the end of words (day), a-e most common at the end (make), eigh is rare (eight or sleigh).
By the beginning of Phase 6 children should know most of the common grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPC). They should be able to read hundreds of words, doing this in three ways:
- reading the words automatically if they are very familiar
- decoding them quickly and silently because their sounding and blending routine is well established;
- decoding them aloud;
Children's spelling should be phonemically accurate although it may still be a little unconventional at times. Spelling usually lags behind reading as it is harder.
During this phase children become fluent readers and increasingly accurate spellers.
Children that have moved through all phonic phases will be taught in a dedicated group that will focus on supporting development of writing and comprehension.
