Bienvenue au département des langues. (French)
Bienvenido al departamento de idiomas. (Spanish)
Welcome to the Modern Languages Department at Weydon.
At Weydon students study French and Spanish in the first term of year 7. In the spring term of year 7 pupils choose either French or Spanish and the language is continued up to and including GCSE. We offer the opportunity to take up a second language (French or Spanish) in year 10 and 11.
Students study the language, life and culture of French and Spanish speaking countries. Students are assessed equally in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a variety of contexts such as personal identity, school, holidays, world of work, travel and leisure. We are very fortunate to be one of the only schools in the area to employ language assistants. Pupils are engaged in speaking to native speakers who work both in the classroom and outside with small groups.
The department has a suite of wireless laptops and students are given regular access to improve their linguistic skills using facilities such as grammar based internet exercises, real contact with foreign schools via E-mail, research based enquiries on the internet and with online revision exercises from the GCSE examination boards. We also have a range of CDRoms which complement students’ work in class.
| The department has a classroom equipped with audio equipment and headphones enabling pupils to record their spoken work for teacher assessment and to give a focus and purpose to speaking work. Video is also used to further develop linguistic and cultural awareness.
The emphasis in the department is on enabling students to communicate with the language in an accurate and purposeful way which will enable students to use the language in the wider world and to develop the intellectual skills of adapting structure and manipulating language for their own purposes.
Trips abroad
We offer students the opportunity to develop their linguistic skills and to experience life in our trips abroad. We have previously enjoyed a trip to the Loire Valley in France which included cultural events with formal language lessons and involved students experiencing French culture whilst staying with a French family. We are currently researching a Spanish trip for the next academic year.
Dictionaries
Students benefit from having a dictionary to use at home to enable them to complete homework. We recommend that you purchase a dictionary for your son/daughter. |
