Art & Design: Key Stage 3

Year 7 Projects

Visual Elements

You will be using various VISUAL ELEMENTS throughout all your Art and Design work, but during year 7 you will be concentrating on them one by one.

Most of them will be used during the first project, called "Visual Elements" and the rest during the other year 7 projects. The first you will use will be LINE.

Line

A point that moves - is the most basic, the one we all started with as a baby (scribble!) and the one artists usually start with when drawing and planning out their work. Line can be developed to give exciting pattern and texture to work.

Shape

is created when a line comes back and joins up with itself.

Tone

is the use of light and shade to give a flat line drawing a 3-dimensional, solid look. Tone can range from white, through light grey, mid-grey, dark grey to black.

Self-Image

During this project you will explore various techniques of portraying yourselves, what you look like, your likes and dislikes, your friends and family. You will see how other artists have used similar ideas about self-image. Colour will be used in a variety of ways - not always realistically!

Recreating Landscapes

Here you will do Art-work based on the local environment, especially focusing on how to create a feeling of space and 3 dimensions through the use of colour and tone.
In key stage 3 students usually work on termly projects, experimenting with a variety of media and ideas and starting points. Most of the work is done in sketchbooks, but some final pieces are completed on a larger scale.

Projects

Year 7 - Visual Elements / Self-Image / Recreating Landscapes

Year 8 - What's In A Building / Shared View / Objects and Viewpoints

Year 9 - Rotation Through 3 Terms. Drawing and Painting / Printmaking / ceramics

How To Use Your Sketchbook
Your sketchbook should show all the work that you do in the class and homework in an ordered and logical way. Please:
  • Use every page
  • Fill every page
  • Never tear out any pages
  • Aim to make your sketchbook as exciting to look at as possible - full of strong tone, colour, pattern, ideas, photos, notes, etc.

Year 8 Projects
During Year 8 you will combine your use of the visual elements, taught in year 7, with more challenging concepts and ideas.

What's In A Building
In this project you will learn how to show 3-dimensional space on a 2-dimensional surface, how architects and designers can create inspirational buildings through their use of shapes, scale, pattern and surface textures, and create your own piece of work from these ideas.

Objects and Viewpoints
Here you will learn how to draw objects from various viewpoints - looking up at them, looking down on them, changing the angle you look at them - and then, looking at the work of Cubist artists such as Picasso and Braque, you will create your own piece of work using their ideas and ways of working.

Shared Views
In this project you will look at tthe work of other cultures, e.g. Australian aborigine, Mexican, Celtic to see how their work portrays their views and ideas about their worlds. You will look at and experiment with their ways of working to help you produce your own work.
