This course leads to qualifications at various levels, depending on the quality of work of, and contribution made by, each individual student.

The qualifications to which students will have access are:

-           ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness at Level 1 or 2.  (This qualification is equivalent to GCSE standard.  The Level 1 Award is equivalent to GCSE Grades G to D, Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE Grades A*-C).

-           St John’s Ambulance Young Life Saver Award (at ‘Junior’ or ‘Senior’ level).

Students will also undertake extended work experience.

Students spend five periods per week on this course in Year 10.  In Year 11 this increases to six periods per week, with an additional full day spent in the workplace.

Year 10

The ‘Certificate of Personal Effectiveness’ Course:  This course consists of a series of personal and group ‘challenges’ taken from a range of topic areas which include:

Communication

Citizenship and Community

Sport and Leisure

Independent Living

The Environment

Vocational Preparation

Health and Fitness

Work Related Learning and Enterprise

Science and Technology

Expressive Arts

‘Challenges’ are varied and cover the six Key Skills of Working with Others, Improving Own Learning, Problem Solving, Research, Discussion and Oral Presentation.

Students use ICT to present their work; many of the projects are practical in nature and involve a range of making and doing skills.  Students also complete Health and Safety in the Workplace and Emergency Aid courses.

Year 11

1.         In School

In Work Related Curriculum lessons, students complete their Certificate of Personal Effectiveness Challenges and Coursework Portfolio.

2.         In the Workplace

Students also go into the workplace on one day each week.  They may choose to specialise in a single occupational area or may undertake a series of short placements in a number of areas. Experience and vocational skills gained in the workplace count towards their ASDAN ‘Cope’ qualification.
