The Sir William Siemens Medal Programme | What is it? The national Sir William Siemens Medal Programme was launched in 1993, the year in which Siemens celebrated its 150th anniversary in he UK. The original Sir William Siemens Medal was awarded by London University Imperial College in 1883. Siemens offer this award to a limited amount of schools and colleges.
What is the aim of the programme? The programme aims to encourage more young people to have an interest in science and technology.
How is the medal awarded? One student per year from the Product Design GCSE course at Ashdown can win a Siemens Award. The winning student must display a high level of practical ability and confidence in designing, making and modifying a quality product for an identified purpose, selecting and using resources effectively. The emphasis is on the final product of the GCSE coursework with a quality supporting design folio. Students must show an understanding of the manufacturing implications involved in the production of their product, and apply this knowledge to their own design development. The design and make activity must show planning leading to an innovative and relevant final marketable product.
