Science

Science is taught by specialist teachers in two well resourced laboratories. Each year group studies a range of topics relevant to physics, chemistry and biology. Practical work, demonstrations, interactive whiteboards and ICT are used in lessons to engage pupils’ attention and interest.

Year 5, 6 and 7 are taught Science in form classes. Year 8 are grouped in order to better prepare them for their future scientific studies.

Learning at home

Key stage 3 pupils may find the following websites useful to help with homework tasks and revision:

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize

www.dontstoplearning.com/ks3science/contents.htm

www.docbrown.info/ks3science.htm

Pupils often find scientific vocabulary difficult; you can use the links above to the word sheets to use with your child to help their understanding of the key words from each topic.

Pupils enjoy the practical tasks completed within topics but sometimes find it difficult to fully explain their findings using evidence. Encouraging pupils to read their work aloud and discussing their ideas can help to develop their scientific writing.

Assessment

Pupils will be assessed throughout the year using a variety of means. Pupils complete end of topic tests and each piece of work is assessed and levelled against set criteria.

Teacher assessments are based on the teacher’s knowledge of the pupil's class work, observations during lessons and interaction between teacher and pupil.

End of year assessments for Year 5, 6 and 8 take place in the summer term.
