Core Science & Additional Science

The programme of study for Science at Key Stage 4 has changed. Students now follow a one year course leading to the award of the Core Science GCSE which contains aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A percentage of students will have completed this by the end of Year 9.

Students who have studied the "Science Plus" course during Year 9 will have the choice of completing the Core Science GCSE over Years 10 and 11, allowing more choices from the other option subjects that may best suit their interests and abilities.

The emphasis of the course has moved away from science knowledge and more towards the process of science enquiry and reporting. After the successful completion of this examination it is envisaged that most students will follow the Additional Science, particularly those students who will wish to study sciences at Key Stage 5. This provides an excellent foundation for A Level study.

There is however, the opportunity in Year 11 to study other related science subjects such as Human Physiology, Environmental Science or Astronomy, which more closely match the interests of individual students. These subjects have proved highly motivating to students but it should be noted however, that these choices will limit the studying of Science A Levels post 16.
