What will you be learning?

Studying A level Chemistry at Cowes High School gives you the facts to have opinions based in truth. It is extremely interesting.

The course is suited to students who enjoy interpreting and explaining phenomena for themselves. As with all sciences, the factual aspects are important but they will be used as a basis for speculation about possible explanations for the behaviour of matter. If you like learning new practical skills, applying problem solving skills and acquiring knowledge, then this course is for you.

You will be studying

The AS course covers:
A link module to strengthen your GCSE knowledge and understanding. It contains an introduction to Electronic Structure, type of bonding and the special chemistry of group 2 and group 7.
A module which studies organic chemistry, sometimes called the
chemistry of Carbon. Everything from products used in perfumes to how we use crude oil to and its products to create the world of the 21st century. It also contains a green chemistry module to evaluate Mans impact on the environment.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is by both traditional examination and practical work.

So, come and wrestle with Kekule’s dream about the structure of Benzene; find out why 2,4,6-Trinitromethylbenzene can travel at 7km a second, or make a buffer a see how it works.

Qualification:     Level 3:     AS Level Grade A - E

Possible Progression Routes:

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Chemistry, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses.

You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
