September -What to do in your garden this month
General
This a good time to tidy up.
Get rid of leaves as they fall as slugs and snails hid under under them.
Collect the leaves in black bags with a few holes stabbed in them. If you leave these for 6 months they will turn into fabulous leaf mound which you can then put out on your flower borders in the spring.
Look in the shops for daffodil and crocus bulbs, these can be planted in tubs and flower borders this month.
In the vegetable garden
Now is the time to:
Cut back your summer raspberries - cut out all the old canes leaving those that didn't fruit this year.
Make new strawberry plants by potting on the strawberry runners
Sow winter lettuce, salads such as rocket, mizuma, pak choi - they will grow well outside throughout the winter
Look in the shops for garlic and onion sets, these can be planted next month for over wintering.
In the kitchen
Now's the time to make chutneys and jams. Check the allotment association site for some great recipes - www.allotment .org.uk - They also have great information for gardener
Have you got a gardening question? Or a recipe to share?
Bye for now and good gardening
