23rd September 2011
Dear Parents/Carers,
Learning Platform address:
School Photographs: Monday 26th September Please remember your child’s photograph will be taken on Monday so please ensure they are in the correct school uniform. You may send them into school with a comb or hair brush so they can prepare themselves!
Meet the Teacher for Reception Parents: Tuesday 27th September 2.45pm This is an opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher and teaching assistant who will share information about the learning that will take place this term and general house keeping information. We will open the gate at the back of the school so you can access the playground and enter the classrooms from where you usually pick up your child.
Parent Workshop: How to help your child with Reading and Writing at Home. Thursday 29th September 7-9pm We have had a good response to date. I hope as many parents as possible can join us on Thursday evening. Tea & coffee will be available before the meeting starts at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you. (See letter on learning platform for details.)
Scooters and Bicycles: I would like to remind all children and parents that bicycles and scooters may not be ridden on the school site at morning drop off and school pick up times. Children must dismount and wheel their bicycles or scooters as there are too many children, adults and younger siblings on site at these times.
Service of Thanksgiving: Sunday 2nd October All Saints Church Wokingham, 3pm All Saints Church are holding a Thanksgiving of Creation with the Blessing of Animals on 2nd October. Bishop Andrew Proud, Bishop of Reading will be leading the hour long service. Everyone is welcome with or without an animal!
Life Education Bus: Thursday 29th & Friday 30th October The Bus visits both the Gorse Ride schools each year to deliver lessons to each class focussing on our Personal, Social and Health Curriculum. The topics covered are “Taking Care” for Nursery, “All About Me” for Reception, “My Wonderful Body” for Year 1 and “Feelings” for Year 2.
PTA AGM: Wednesday 5th October 7pm Infant School: We have a very active PTA who put on lots of family events each year and raise funds for both schools. Please join us at the AGM to find out what the PTA have done this year. You might be interested in offering to join the committee or if you cannot commit as much time possibly offer to help at one of our future events. Hope to see you there.
Book Week: 4th – 6th October: Books will be available to buy from the school hall after school each day. On the 6th October children may come to school dressed as a favourite character from a story. (NO ACTION HEROS PLEASE)
World Diabetes Day: The 14th November is World Diabetes Day. Mrs Hutchison, one of our parents, is cycling from London to Paris to raise funds for the charity Diabetes UK. She has asked if the school would support her by taking part in some fundraising. As we have a pupil in our school who is diabetic we would like to participate in this. Mrs Hutchison will join us for an assembly on 7th November to tell the children about the event and the charity. Therefore we are holding a non-school uniform day on Friday 11th November. If your child wishes to take part they will need to contribute a £1. We would also like to hold a cake sale. If parents would be kind enough to donate small cakes or biscuits to be brought to the school hall on the morning of the 11th November and children will need to bring 10p’s and 20p’s if they wish to purchase some. We wish Mrs Hutchison good luck with her cycle ride.
Students: We have been very fortunate that two gap year students have volunteered to work in school this year. They are Tim Mountain and Steve Popplestone both of whom are working in the FBC also. They will join us on Monday afternoons and are supporting in our Reception and Year 1 classes at present.
Safety Issue: It has been brought to my attention that some children are playing in the FBC carpark after school hours. One child was almost reversed across as he was riding a scooter behind parked cars and could not be seen by the driver. Parents should not allow their children to ride on bicycles or scooters in the car park area.
REMINDER: School Fruit and Vegetable Snacks: Please remember no apples or nuts due to allergies within the school. Thank you.
INSET Days 2011-2012: The Infant and Junior Schools have set their INSET days for the coming academic year. The dates are as follows:
5th September 2011, 3rd January 2012, 20th February 2012 and 11th June 2012. The Infant School has a further INSET day on the 7th October, when the Nursery and Infant schools will be closed but the Junior school will be open.
