Vikings invade the First Form

23 May 2012

First Form children and staff were transformed into traditional Vikings for the day and came to school dressed in full replica ‘kyrtill’ clothing, brooches and horned helmets.  Viking chants whipped up excitement and started a packed day of re-enacting historical battles and learning about Viking life.

‘Axe-wielding’ Viking leader Ian, who had the children believe he had fought many a battle with the Saxons, led our little Vikings through each session.  The children had a chance to examine a range of replica artefacts, such as glass and horn drinking cups, a cauldron and other household utensils.  This ‘hands-on’ session reinforced the fact that, while the Vikings were feared warriors in battle, their everyday life was a struggle as they tried to provide food, warmth and shelter for their families.

The children utilised their knowledge by playing Viking inspired board games and carried out research from information boards to complete a Viking quiz.  The St John’s ‘Old Norsemen’ watched in awe as Viking Ian’s demonstration of weaponry and armour ended in style with him cutting a melon in half with his axe!  Our historians were entranced with the re-telling of the breath-taking Anglo-Saxon epic tale of ‘Beowulf’ and the story of the struggle between the hero and the bloodthirsty monster.  Happy Vikings went home with many a tale being told of the adventures of the day.
