The Vision
Waingels College – Building for the Future

The project

To transform the college on its existing site to provide a 21st century learning environment for 1,500 students and the wider local community. The finished buildings and re-modelled site will be fitted out to act as a pathfinder of excellent practice for other schools in the region.

The Vision

To build a highly sustainable and environmentally positive place of learning that enables students to become highly skilled and resourceful learners able to make a success of their lives and the lives of others.

The reality

Sustainability and environmental features:

  • This will be achieved by using the latest lighting and heating technology to drastically reduce the levels of carbon emissions and waste.
  • The main buildings will be constructed using sustainable wooden frames and panels – a first for any school in the UK
  • The landscape of the site will be ‘opened out’ and extended to enable outdoor learning and social use to be maximised

21st century learning

The design concept has been shaped by the notion of creating the maximum flexibility of learning spaces and the creation of smaller ‘schools-within-a-school’. This will be achieved by:

  • Creating a central community pavilion with shared resources surrounded by three 11-19 learning communities of approximately 500 students each providing facilities for a pair of  academic faculties and two social ‘houses’
  • Ensuring that all internal and external learning s[paces can be re-configured for individual, small group, class and large group working
  • Providing the latest technology to enable students to learn anytime, anywhere
  • Extending the services and facilities to the local community and beyond the normal confines of school holidays and hours

The cost

A £31.1 million contract has been awarded to Wilmott Dixon for the design and construction of the ‘new’ Waingels. The money has been provided by central government and not local council tax payers.

The phasing

Work will begin in April 2009 and be completed over three phases as follows:

Phase One (April 2009 to July 2010)

  • Community Pavilion (housing main hall, dining facilities, library and offices)
  • Maths and science accommodation
  • Humanities and Technology accommodation

Phase Two (August 2010 to July 2011)

  • Communications and Creative Arts accommodation

Phase Three (August to October 2011)

  • Final landscaping and handover
