Identification, Support and Provision

Gifted, Able and Talented students at Waingels College:

Ensures the high attainment of the most able by recognising that there are pupils at Waingels College who have the ability to excel academically in one or more subjects. These are the ‘gifted’ and those who have the ability to excel in practical skills, ‘the talented’. The college is committed to providing a challenging environment that stimulates the development of pupils holistically.

Identification

Whole college identification:- Exceptionally gifted and talented students will be identified during their first year at Waingels College and placed on a whole school register by November of each new academic year.

To identify if a student is gifted or talented the college will use a range of agreed criteria and sources of evidence, as advised by the DFE including:

  • Information on who is ‘gifted’ or ‘talented’ as identified by the primary feeder schools upon transition.
  • Key Stage 2 SATS levels in maths and English - preferably 5a in both.
  • Average combined SATS KS2 score of 33, based on English and Maths levels.
  • Reading and spelling ages, upon entry – preferably 15.00+yrs.
  • CATs (Cognitive abilities tests), done on entry to year 7 (non verbal, verbal and quantitative) - score of 129 + in verbal or quantitative is preferred.
  • Interim review grades from the autumn term of year 7.
  • Teacher nominations based on attainment in subject assessments.
  • Parent nominations based on personal judgment.

Parents or carers will be informed by the end of the Autumn Term of year 7 if their child is eligible to be placed on the register.

Parents will have the opportunity to nominate their child via a form on the school website ( LINK TO FORM HERE ) and their child will be placed on the register upon a discussion with the Gifted and Talented coordinator/  relevant curriculum Team Leader, as long as they fulfil aspects of the criteria detailed above.

Subject specific identification: - Each subject area will identify the top 5% of high achieving students in their subject, using specific subject criteria, and this will form a subject register. It would be expected that the gifted students on the whole college register would appear on several of these subject specific lists.

Support

The students on the whole college and subject specific registers register will be supported by:

Whole school systems – Curriculum Team leaders, Heads of subjects and Learning team leaders will monitor the progress of the individual students on the whole school register and the subject registers.

The Gifted and Talented Coordinator – will monitor progress and the uptake of wider enrichment opportunities of the students on the whole school register.
