Students Gifted in ICT: A Policy for Their Monitoring and Evaluation

I.C.T.

ICT Staff closely monitor all students, but are particularly vigilant in identifying students that demonstrate ICT capability significantly above that expected for their age.

Pupils who are gifted in ICT are likely to:

  • Learn and apply new ICT techniques quickly
  • Use initiative to exploit the potential of more advanced features of ICT tools
  • Transfer and apply ICT skills and techniques confidently in new contexts
  • Explore independently beyond the given breadth of an ICT topic
  • Initiate ideas and solve problems, use ICT effectively and creatively, develop systems that meet personal needs and interests

Exemplar Work:

Year 7:

Control Systems: At this stage students are introduced to Control Systems and the concepts of Flowcharts and Sequencing Diagrams. Gifted students are expected and identified by their ability to use their initiative to exploit the potential of the Flowol Software by controlling more outputs and motors within particular mimics and identifying opportunities for further controls, such as designing their own flowcharts to control the bridge lights mimic to control traffic using more or less delays depending on traffic flow.

Year 8:

ICT Systems: Students at this stage are expected to design and build a system for monitoring and recording sales in a garden centre. Gifted students can recognise the potential of a database and tend to explore the possibility of using more tables to record stock details for further costing.

Year 9:

At this stage students are expected to build upon their knowledge of control systems and introduce motors, counters and data loggers into their flowcharts in order to enhance control of the mimics. Gifted students can use their prior knowledge to explore the use control of the mimics beyond what is expected in this topic.

Year 10:

Key Skills:

Students are expected to show understanding of the technical specifications of Personal Computers. Gifted students will already have a good understanding of technical specifications. Gifted students are expected to transfer their skills from spreadsheets to presenting a document that compares a variety of computers (available on the current market) and appraises pros and cons of particular machines.

GNVQ:

Gifted students are expected to use source codes from websites to enhance their own website.

Year 11:

GNVQ:

Gifted students should be using digital cameras and available musical software to create their own sounds and images for their Multimedia Presentation.

Extra-curricular:

A range of digital filming equipment is available to allow gifted students to explore ICT beyond the curriculum topics.

A suite of 24 computers is available during break and lunchtime. Computers are also available in the library.

There are four ICT technicians and they are available for consultation from all students. Many students use this resource readily
