Mathematical Challenges for Able Pupils in Key Stage 1 and 2

This publication has been written to accompany the publication ‘Mathematical Challenges for Able Pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2’.  It follows the format of the ‘Reasoning about Numbers’ booklet which formed the basis for the Problem Solving session of the NNS Five-Day Course: This incorporated challenges (i.e. extensions) and simplifications for each of 15 example problems provided.  These problems are not directly referenced as part of this book, but are a worthwhile source of additional materials.

The challenges and simplifications provided in Section One for each of the 83 problems in the ‘Mathematical Challenges…’ book have been developed by the Suffolk Maths Team, in conjunction with a working party of teachers from Suffolk primary and middle schools. Each accompaniment also includes:

·         Possible strategies for how to tackle each problem, for example suggesting how to model the solving of the problem in the main part of the lesson;

·         Possible resources which may be used in order to enhance the visual and/or kinaesthetic aspects of the lesson, including ICT where appropriate;

·         Relevant notes for teachers;

·         Links to similar problems (identified by the type of problem).

It is intended that all of these will provide support for the teaching of problem solving lessons as part of as many units of work as possible, and indeed as part of everyday good practice.

The resources are separated into three sections.  The first covering Year 1 and 2, the second Year 3 and 4 and the last Year 5 and 6 resources.  Click in the relevant table to download the required challenge.  All are produced in Word and quick to download.
