Passing judgements about something you read is easy, and you probably do it all the time. It's when you make a personal decision about the text, for example:

TASK: Do you make any judgements about the characters in the following piece of writing?
As the boys strutted down the street, their heads hung and kicking an empty can of Diet Coke, the women pushing prams towards them stopped chatting and slowed their pace. They looked from one another two the young boys nervously, their knuckles whitening as they clutched the prams tightely. The boys didn't seem to notice the womens' presence and as they got closer it was clear that they would not all fit onto the small pavement, and someone would get pushed into the busy road. At the last minute one of the boys looked up, his face framed by his dirty hoody, and he spat on the ground close to the womens' feet.... |
