Mr G Croxon- Deputy Head of Sixth Form

From the Headteacher
The Sixth Form
I am delighted that you are considering joining our Sixth Form. In the past few years we have been so pleased and proud to see the numbers in our Sixth Form grow and to share our students’ success.

At Edgbarrow School we are wholly committed to ensuring that our Sixth Form is vibrant and challenging. We are convinced that being a member of this purposeful and successful Sixth Form, benefiting from excellent leadership, monitoring and support while at the same time offering a wide choice of courses, is an opportunity you should seriously consider.

Our Track Record
Edgbarrow School Sixth Form has a proven track record of success with young people of which we are very proud. Our results continue to place us as one of the best performing Sixth Forms not only in the immediate area but also throughout Berkshire.

We strive for the highest possible academic standards. It is our aim to prepare students for higher education, lifelong learning, and their future careers.  Educational qualifications, however, are not the only consideration when making career choices; personal qualities are also very important and we offer you opportunities to develop many of the skills you will need for your future. We will work with you as an individual by giving you all the support you need to achieve your full potential in all areas of school life. All we ask in return is a positive attitude towards your studies, a co-operative attitude to working with Edgbarrow staff and a willingness to get involved in the life of the school.

Sixth Form Entry
Entry into our Sixth Form is open to present Year 11 students or students from other schools and colleges in the area. I am delighted to see so many new students come and join our Sixth Form. Before you make this decision please ensure that you meet our criteria, have spoken to staff and are fully aware of the implications of the subject choices you are making. It is very important that you make the right subject choices for you and that you understand and accept the high level of commitment required to pass these courses and achieve your best.

Mr Elsey, Headteacher

From the Head of Sixth Form

Edgbarrow Sixth Form has a great deal to offer you. It has grown significantly in numbers over the past few years and is well established as a highly respected learning centre. Results are impressive and for the past three years we have been rated as excellent or outstanding in the national Advanced Level Performance System rankings, putting us in the top 10% of further education institutions in the country with regard to adding value to our students’ education. The reasons for this impressive progress are numerous:

• Great teaching
• Superb care for individuals’ well-being and their progress
• Respect for individuals’ abilities and ideas
• Warm and positive relationships

We work hard and we work together. We expect high standards but we genuinely enjoy spending time with our students and offer many extra opportunities to make their Sixth Form experience a rich and enjoyable one. We encourage our students to suggest improvements as this can make their time with us more rewarding and beneficial. Preparation for university and for future careers is ongoing and very thorough.

The Sixth Form:
A New Structure for Even More Opportunities
We have established a framework of 30 positions of responsibility to give our students more opportunities to develop roles for themselves, and to create an exciting programme of extra-curricular activities that they organise. Edgbarrow now has a Head Boy, Head Girl, two Deputy Head Boys and two Deputy Head Girls. We have also introduced a system of Captains for: Social Activities; Public Speaking; Sport; Fundraising; Performing Arts; Tuck Shop; Creativity (Artwork / Display / Photography); PR and Communication.

Each of these areas is led by a Year 13 student with a Year 12 Deputy, and the Sixth Form students vote for the Captains. This is a very exciting aspect of the Sixth Form that allows the students to work closely with staff and students across the rest of the school to be involved in an even wider range of activities, which will help them to develop into confident, capable and experienced young people who are really well prepared for university or employment. All meetings are formally chaired, with minutes, which gives the students excellent training in leading and participating in formal meetings.

Future Development
As Edgbarrow’s Sixth Form continues to grow and develop, we believe that it is a really good time to be joining us. Bear in mind that, as the Sixth Form becomes more popular, competition for places will become more intense, so please adhere to all application deadlines by submitting the forms found at the back of this prospectus by Monday 13th December 2010 and make the most of Year 11! It will stand you in good stead later on. I look forward, with great anticipation, to working with you in the future.
