Physical Education

Physical Education plays an important part in the life of the school. The school is very well equipped with a good sized field, a hard play area, a well equipped hall and a heated swimming pool for the summer. Physical Education in the hall includes apparatus and floor work, aimed at developing co-ordination and body strength as well as general all round fitness, and dance.

Games for years 1 and 2 will develop basic skills in catching, throwing, kicking etc. and the children will be encouraged to join in simple games. Children in years 3 and 4 will play more structured traditional games. Small sided versions ensure that all children are involved and are given every opportunity to take part whilst developing important skills. Games include football, netball, kwick cricket, hockey, handball, rounders, and short tennis.

Children in year 4 have the opportunity to take part in competitive sports against other local schools. This culminates in a tournament in the first half of the Summer Term to which you are most welcome to attend.

In the Summer Term all children take part in a sports day and swimming gala.

A large climbing frame and trim trail has been provided by the Friends of Boxford School for use during lessons and at break times. This will help develop the children’s general co-ordination, balance and overall body strength.

All children are given some instruction in swimming. Throughout the winter months the children in years 3 and 4 go to Hadleigh Swimming Pool and during the Summer Term all children get the opportunity to swim in our own pool. They can gain a number of awards aimed at encouraging progress and rewarding success. These awards include distance swimming and water skills which all children, swimmers and non-swimmers can achieve. Each year a group of year 4 children and staff take part in the annual Swimathon which raises money for a number of charities.

A professional coach provides specialist games coaching for children in Years three and four.
