Reading for information

3. Pupils should be taught to:

  1. scan texts to find information
  2. skim for gist and overall impression
  3. obtain specific information through detailed reading
  4. draw on different features of texts, including print, sound and image, to obtain meaning
  5. use organisational features and systems to find texts and information
  6. distinguish between fact and opinion [for example, by looking at the purpose of the text, the reliability of information]
  7. consider an argument critically.

Note for 3a to 3e
Retrieving information on screen includes knowing how to:

  • use the search and find facilities to skim and scan effectively

  • use key words

  • summarise information rather than print off large sections of text.
