Turkey was once the centre of the Ottoman Empireand has been seen as the meeting point of East and West for centuries. For thousands years there have been battles over who controls this amazing country until the modern secular republicwas established in the 1920s by nationalist leader Kemal Ataturk.

Turkey straddles the continents of Europe and Asia, and it's important location has given it major influence in the region. For example it has control over the entrance to the Black Sea.
