Examination Results 2009

Congratulations to all students for an outstanding  set of examination results.  Both at GCSE and at sixth form, RGS was listed in the national press as one of the leading schools in the country, in many cases outperforming leading independent schools.

Here are just some of the headline figures:

International Baccalaureate

·         The first cohort achieved an average of 35 IB points – equivalent to 4.5 grades As at A level!  Four of the students took up places at Oxbridge.

A level

·         82% of top grades (A/B), with 45% of grade As!

·         Twenty four students attained more than three grade As and two students joined Oxbridge colleges in October.

GCSE

·         100% of students passed 5+ GCSE at A*-C (including English and mathematics)

·         62.5% achieved the top grades A*/A

·         The average capped grade score (the top 8 subjects) per student was equivalent to 8 grade As!

Success for ALL students

Beneath the headline figures for top grades, and equally important, is the success of students in achieving their own personal targets and succeeding in subjects that they might not have found ‘easy’.  Well done to all students, and for those off to university, best wishes from all of the staff at RGS.

Exchange visit to Traben-Trabach

Pupils left for  Traben-Trabach on 27th June and returned on the 1st July.  They thoroughly enjoyed their stay, working on a project in the school in the mornings and having lots of time in the afternoons and evenings with their German families. They were also able to visit Trier as a group and had a party on the Tuesday evening.

Higher Education Evening
On the evening of 29th April, year 12 students and their parents attended the school’s UCAS event to gain an insight into the mind of an admissions tutor and to discover the various financial pathways. We were very grateful to be joined by two guests - Humayon Pramanik from Education Liaison at Queen Mary University London and Sophie Hurden from Education Liaison at Canterbury Christ Church University – who, respectively, gave advice on writing a personal statement and student finance.

Piano Masterclass Day

This is the 2nd annual Piano Masterclass Day, led by Mrs Coe and assisted Madelaine Jones 13E .  The workshop explored: warm up techniques, technical exercises, cool down exercises and a variety of repertoire for the Piano.  The day ended with a visit to the Albert Hall to see the pianist and composer Ludivico Einaudi perform a selection of works from his new album "Nightbook".  “It was a fantastic day” said one of the participants.

Medal success for swimmers

Several performances were outstanding at this year's Kent

Schools Swimming Championships. The intermediate girls team

had a great competition with Sarah Mapley bringing home Gold

for the 100m butterfly. Lucy Booth narrowly missed out on

the final for the 100m backstroke. Victoria Morris came 13th

in the 100m breaststroke and Molly Stewart raced in the 100m

freestyle. The senior girls event saw Cydney Martin win a

Bronze medal for her 100m backstroke swim. Based on these

performances Sarah and Cydney have now been selected to swim

for the County. Many congratulations to all who took part

OFSTED: Praise for outstanding RGS

Ofsted have awarded RGS a grading of ‘outstanding’ in every category.  The inspectors visited in November and praised the exceptional standards and outstanding progress made by students.

The headteacher continues to lead with determination and enthusiasm and the governors, senior leadership team and middle managers are equally dedicated and effective.

When students leave the school, they have not only the qualifications they need to proceed to higher education but also the maturity and independent learning skills that serve them well in their chosen careers and futures.

Students' learning is excellent because they are taught by enthusiastic, knowledgeable, innovative and committed teachers, described by one parent as 'inspiring, amiable staff'.

The quality of teaching and learning, students' personal development and the care provided is as excellent in the sixth form as in the main school.
